“Any leader should be able to communicate your M&A business model drivers, but that is only part of the M&A Formula. You have to ask yourself if the information the M&A driver (or drivers) is understood by the employees.
In order to create a ‘sense of belonging’ among your workforce, you have to talk to them, but you also have to listen. We can’t overstate the importance of two-way communication, and creating an open workplace where it is easy to cascade information and get your message across.
This is crucial in corporate M&A. You may think right now that this is an obvious point to make. Yet, in many M&A deals people forget that the speed of change is so much higher in ‘buy’ than in ‘build.’ When you build, there is more time to secure a feeling of belonging and involve human resources.
The same cannot be said in an M&A deal. By the time you learn the real story about the worries of your colleagues or employees, it is usually too late to react. This is particularly true for the newly acquired people with whom you have no previous history.”
